Dear Fr. Joe:
I believe in God, but why do I need salvation?
Salvation
has to do with us being saved, and we need that, don't we? We have to
remember that if salvation was simply a matter of belief, the devil would
be in Heaven. I mean, he believes all the right stuff, probably better
than we do! What Jesus saves us from is the human condition - the presence
of evil in our hearts and the world around us.
We need salvation in Jesus because we are heading towards destruction.
Our sins have a way of destroying us, consuming us and leading us to greater
sin - which turns our hearts away from God's love.
From the Catechism:
"God created us without us: but he did not will to save us without
us" (St. Augustine). To receive his mercy, we must admit our faults.
"If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is
not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive
our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 Jn 8-9). (CCC
1847) For more from the Catechism, click here.
Enjoy another day in God's presence!
