We're All Meant to Live
by Dcn. Jim Corder

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
We were meant to live
We were meant to live

Have you ever felt like you needed to step back and take a break? Life is very stressful. There is prom, graduation, and my future all racing around in my mind. How do I turn it off for just a little while? So how do I "honor the Sabbath?"

When you look at all of the things you need to get done, it is easy to forget the most important things. Our priorities get messed up and instead of living for a higher reason we become doers, rather understand we are born to be, not do. We are here to be something, not just to be known for what we do.

It is during these times that we can lose our way, our purpose, even our hope. If this describes you, then maybe you feel like the person described in the song, "Meant to Live," by Switchfoot. And perhaps you need to remember the commandment to "honor the Sabbath."

This commandment, in a strict interpretation, is the idea that we need to give to God a day when we are free of the stress and the difficulties that come to us the rest of the week.

Fumbling his confidence
And wond'ring why the world has passed him by
Hoping that he's bid for more than arguments,
And failed attempts to fly, fly

In our modern world we have lost that balance between working and resting. For some of us, we have forgotten how to take it easy. If we are truly faithful to the commandment "honor the Sabbath," then we need to learn to relax, reflect and give gratitude to the God of our lives. We need to learn how to take a break from all of the "stuff" of life.

Even Jesus needed to take time to relax, reflect and give thanks and gratitude to God. Jesus, throughout the Gospels, is going to and from places of prayer. We hear Jesus going to the mountain to pray, the desert to pray -- we hear him going off by Himself. Jesus understood this balance between being busy and being at rest.

Dreaming about Providence
And whether mice or men have second tries
Maybe we've been livin with our eyes half open
Maybe we're bent and broken, broken

We aren't able to cope with the struggles of everyday life when we haven't had enough rest or relaxation. Troubles seem bigger than they really are. Depression and other difficulties are compounded without rest.

Sometimes, we need to just sit and be still and feel the love of God come over us. Sometimes, this world can push and shove us around, but when we rest, relax and pray, we are able to know that God is with us.

Perhaps when we find this balance between being busy and being at rest we will find ourselves thinking more of the important things in life. Perhaps God will become a bigger part of our daily living. Let's pray that we don't leave our faith on a shelf and simply dust it off once a week, but rather learn the art of balancing work, rest and play -- and feel the love of God. Remember: We are meant to live!

How do you honor the Sabbath? What do you do to keep it special?
What are some healthy ways that you can relax and unwind?
Are you "known" by what you do, or by who you are?
